sendmail是基于UNIX的网络上处理电子邮件的通信流量交换和路由计算的程序，尽管 sendmail几乎运行在每一个UNIX系统上，但是它是UNIX系统管理中最困难、文档最贫乏的领域之一。

《sendmail》的第二版包括Berkeley的sendmail Version 8.8和其他大多数系统上的版本。这是迄今为止编写得最全面的关于sendmail的著作。本书提供了一个完整的sendmail 教程，加上关于这一程序每一个方面的参考文档。

更重要的是，本书是最具有权威性的，因为作者之一是Eric Allman，他是sendmail的开发人员。

Bryan Costales是科罗拉多Mercury Mail的技术主任。他总是那么前卫，“远程往返”于Laramie, Wyoming的家和办公室。他活跃在系统管理领域已长达15年之久，并且十多年来撰写过不少有关计算机软件方面的文章和书籍。他的最著名的书是《C from A to Z》（Prentice Hall公司出版），《Unix Communications 》(Howard Sams公司出版)，当然还有《sendmail》 （O'Reilly & Associates公司出版）。在他不多的业余时间里，他幻想着在海上航行，和一群称作“Make Believe Sailors”的朋友一起写幻想小说。
 
 
Eric Allman
 
Eric Allman 是《sendmail》的最初作者。在加州大学工作期间，他参与了在伯克利的 UNIX早期开发工作。他的UNIX经验是从UNIX第四版开始的，他仍然还保留着那些手册（他为此被人称作老鼠）若干年过去，他写了许多工具类软件，均在BSD的不同版本中有所体现，
包括-me macros, tset, trek, syslog, vacation, 当然还有 sendmail。

除了参加在伯克利的INGRES数据库管理项目和Mammoth基础设施项目之外， Eric 还在
奥地利Britton Lee（即后来的Sharebase）国际应用系统分析研究所从事window 系统中的用户数据库和应用界面方面的研究，在国际计算机科学研究所，从事Ring Array 处理器项目中的基于神经元网络的语音识别研究。几年来，他还与人共同主持了《C 顾问》专栏的
UNIX评论。

Eric 被认为是不知疲倦的工作狂，喜欢用钢笔写作，收集各种各样的酒并藏在他家的地窖中，与他相识17年多的伙伴Kirk McKusick一起分享。他还是USENIX协会的财务主管。
